EXPERTS in Adam's Neighborhood
Adam is a storyteller. He’s fun, engaging, inquisitive and kind -- but he doesn’t have all the answers. After all, he’s on this journey with you, asking questions, too. Instead, Adam’s expert friends weigh in with professional, relatable insight into the tough questions tackled in any given program. Their extensive knowledge base, coupled with Adam’s curious nature, makes for a fun and engaging study of the human condition.
Ellen W. Veenstra, PsyD
Dr. Veenstra earned her doctorate in psychology from Azusa Pacific University and her bachelor's degree in psychology from Calvin College. Her training includes the University of Southern California Medical Center, Los Angeles County Mental Hospital, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. She has worked as a therapist with federal inmates, as an adjunct professor at Azusa Pacific University, and as part of a national crisis response team applying psychological first aid after workplace tragedies. As a developmental psychologist, Dr. Veenstra focuses on teaching practical skills and concepts, in the context of a nurturing relationship, to promote healing and foster growth. When not working at her private practice in Newport Beach, she enjoys playing with her husband and two sons.
Phong B. Luong, Psy.D.
Dr. Phong Luong works as the Graduate Counseling Manager at UC Irvine. In this role, he helps graduate students make academic progress through the development of work-life balance, communication skills, and stress management strategies. He also co-directs a community outreach program called WeAreThem. This UCI Graduate Division initiated program focuses on building strong self-identities and creating support networks for K-12 students. He previously worked as a psychology resident, academic and disabilities counselor, and adjunct professor at Saddleback Community College. His service-oriented life also extends to the mat and cage. He is a certified hatha yoga instructor and is an active Mix Martial Arts/Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighter and youth coach at Triunfo MMA. He sees happiness as long trail runs and long family meals involving spicy Thai food and iced Vietnamese coffee. He enjoys most being with his wife and two children, Auguste and Bijou, as he embraces fatherhood as his most important job.
Kelsey Heeringa is a writer, mother, and wide-eyed seeker of connection within the wild diversity of the human experience. She also happens to be Adam’s best friend in the whole wide world. Adam loves to share, so you can think of her as your very own earthy, crunchy, international bestie-in-residence here at Adam’s Answers. She spent most of her 20s working with deaf blind students, volunteering with low-income youth across various states, plowing her soul into an organic farm, living in a tent alongside trail crews in the mountains, and joining an Intentional Community. With degrees in Community Leadership and Creative Nonfiction, she and her family currently live internationally. Now in China after six years in Africa and one in Europe, they enjoy endlessly learning about people, culture, and where to find the best market.
Kelsey’s writing has been published various places, including The Huffington Post and The Telegraph (UK). Additionally, she has written and directed for high school theatre, designing programs to lead students in experiential exploration of their values and their community. She has a deep love of building committed, authentic relationships and of trying new things, and for both of these passions she brings to her work the well-practiced process of embracing vulnerability and growth.
You want a REAL answer? ASK COUSIN AARON!
(Warning: He may sing you a response.)
Cousin Aaron is a phone salesman and trainer, jack-of-all-trades, and a loyal friend. Aaron is a master of street smarts, with a side of goofy reality. He’s an avid lover of sports, fashion (especially fun t-shirts), indie music and concerts, art shows, all bizarre food trends and styles (pickled foods included!), and basically loves anything new, weird, and exciting. He bowled a 300 in his bowling league, and owns a dozen pairs of elastic shoes. No time for laces for this guy who’s always on-the-go exploring all the nooks and crannies of Los Angeles. He’s the ultimate oddball, grown-up kid-at-heart, and Adam’s actual first cousin.
